Eastlake High School parent Nicole Steinbok is working at the district level on the Schools Start Time Task Force. For more information on the American Pediatrics Association’s research & recommendations on School Start Times for Adolescents, she recommends this link:

https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/134/3/642/74175/School-Start-Times-for-Adolescents

From the article, this quote stands out, “That the evidence strongly implicates earlier school start times (ie, before 8:30 am) as a key modifiable contributor to insufficient sleep.”

Another suggested resource & model for Washington State is the State of California, which has led by example and successfully passed (2019) and enacted (2022) a law requiring Middle School and High School start times to be no earlier than 8 am and 8:30 am respectively. The link for how the law is worded can be found here: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB328
